Ukraine is Europe's second largest country. This lavishly illustrated volume provides a concise and easy-to-read historical survey of Ukraine from earliest times to the present. Each of the book's forty-six chapters is framed by a historical map, which graphically depicts the key elements of the chronological period or theme being discussed. In addition, the entire text is accompanied by sixteen statistical tables and over 300 historic photographs, line drawings, portraits, and reproductions of books and art works, which bring the rich past of Ukraine to life.
This book emphasizes the multicultural nature of Ukraine throughout its history. While ethnic Ukrainians figure prominently, author Paul Robert Magocsi, (Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto) also deals with the many other peoples who live or who have lived within the borders of present-day Ukraine: Poles, Russians, Jews, Crimean Tartars, Germans (including Mennonites), and Greeks, among others.

The Peterson Literary Fund has provided funding for the multi-language translation of Ukraina Redux: On Statehood and National Identity — the revised 2023 edition essay of an Expert Report submitted to the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
Authored by Paul Robert Magocsi, professor in the Department of History and the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and edited by Lubomyr Luciuk, professor in the Department of Political Science at Royal Military College of Canada, the booklet was published by Kashtan Press for the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto.
The Peterson Literary Fund supported the translation of this valuable booklet from English into multiple languages. The publication will soon be available in Ukrainian, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Spanish, Turkish, and Russian.
Ukraina Redux is an important publication that undercuts Putin’s imperialist narrative by keenly demonstrating that Ukraine is not a new construct. Magocsi’s incisive essay succinctly reveals how Ukrainians have attempted to forge a state of their own over several centuries and how their struggle for statehood has been repeatedly undermined by predatory, and often brutal, neighbours.
The publication is exceedingly relevant in light of Russia’s illegal war on Ukraine.
The story behind the release of Ukraina Redux was featured on French radio in an interview with author Paul Magocsi for the Paris-based radio station Fréquence protestante.

The Peterson Literary Fund Translated Book Award is presented biennially. The Translated Book Award recognizes the best recently published translated books of non-fiction or fiction.

The Established Writers Grant is designed for established writers whose proposed manuscript has received approval from a reputable publisher.
